Materials and Construction

Did you notice in the pictures on the page you got here from that the brim of the hat is thick?

No?

Go back and look again.

Yup, it's thick. That's because there's polyurethane foam in there. That's what keeps the sweat out of your eyes and off your glasses. It also keeps the sweat in proximity to the crown of your head instead of letting drip off onto the ground. When it stays near your head it does the job it's meant to do: it evaporates there cooling your head. (No, it's not gross! You've got to wash it before it gets crusty!)

Nice huh?

There's another nice thing about the foam brim. It hugs your head very snugly - snugly enough that it takes more than a 20 MPH wind to blow it off (your mileage may vary) - yet it doesn't feel uncomfortable. This is a VERY comfortable hat.

How it keeps the sun of you is much easier to see.

How does it keep the flies out of my ears? Well maybe it's just that the flies around here are chicken. They stay further from my face too when the hood is down.

Yes hood. Would you rather call it a skirt? Maybe I should have a contest to name it. Let me know what you think.

Having the hood, skirt, or whatever you want to call it out at the edge of the brim keeps it off your neck and allows cooling ventilation.

The hat band is terry cloth with a 100% cotton pile. The rest of the hat is 50% polyester and 50% cotton.

The hat comes in two colors: white and camouflage with a tan background. (There will be color pictures here soon.)

Care

Wash it in the washing machine in warm or cold water. If you use a top loader maybe you should use the gentle cycle. If it's hot and you're in a hurry, dry it on your head. Otherwise let the hood down and let it air dry on something that will hold it up like a head. I've been known to dry mine on an inverted pitcher.

Sizes

I don't follow the normal hat sizing convention.
This hat is special.
It needs special sizing:

Size
Letter
SizeSize
Number
Head Circumference
Measurement
SSmall722 inch
55.9 cm
MMedium7-1/422-25/32 inch
58.5 cm
LLarge7-1/223-9/16 inch
59.9 cm
XLExtra Large7-3/4SOLD OUT
24-11/32 inch
61.8 cm

If your head measures the average of two consecutive sizes you might be able to wear either size, but it would probably be better to get the larger one since you'll likely come up against the less gentle limits of the fabric.

A size S hat will fit a head that measures as small as 21-19/32 inch or 54.9 cm.

A size XL hat will fit a head that measures as large as 24-3/4 inch or 62.8 cm

The reason this scheme of four sizes covers more distance than the conventional sizing is the foam in the brim. It's gently pushy, and I take advantage of that pushiness.

Some people whose head measures the average of two consecutive sizes prefer the hat one size bigger yet. It's that foam. Strange but true. I don't recommend this. I worry that a hat a size and a half too big will blow off in the wind more easily especially if it loosens up with age and use. My head measures almost exactly between 58.54 cm and 59.85 cm. I wear size L, and it feels very nice, and stays on in a fairly stiff breeze. These hats are very, very comfy as long as the fabric isn't pulled tight 'round your head.

So now you're ready to buy at least one, right?
